Deacon Les Card

This Sunday we reached a significant milestone in the life of our church. We ordained our first deacon. Les Card.

Deacons are like shock absorbers. When the church grows and resources are spread thin, deacons are there to bring unity and stability. They are like first responders, providing the leadership we need to ensure no one is left out or left behind.

Deacons watch out for the least among us.

Deacons navigate the challenges of church growth.

Deacons serve so pastors can serve as pastors.

Pray for Les. Pray for his wife Sue and his children. The pastors have asked him to spend the next year developing a plan to build a robust deaconate ministry within our church.

This month a new small group formed in the city of Irvine. We took friends from 3 different groups and sent them back to their hometown to reproduce what we are experiencing in other small groups in Orange, Tustin, and Santa Ana.

Here are 4 reasons this group is awesome.

• Pastor Mike and his wife Lois are a part of the group. Why? Because pastors are people too. They need friendship, encouragement, help, and people to serve.
• Four of the households live nearby. They work, shop, live, and play in the same "neighborhood." Geography helps when it comes to doing life together.
• The hosts are first-time hosts. They have never hosted a "christian meeting" in their home before. Way to go Ali and Mina.
• Jesus will be the topic at every meeting, every week, for as long as they are called to be a small group.

Sign ups for Fall Youth Mentor Program are open, but not for long. Make sure to sign up before all the spots are taken. We are matching students with mentors who meet for study and fellowship during the months of October and November.

Studying what makes a healthy church, a healthy church.

Christianity is social.

We have been adopted by the Father, united to the Son, and filled with the Spirit. God has invited us into his life...into the dance of the Trinity. But it doesn't stop there.

We have also been reconciled to one another, united together as brothers and sisters, and called out to be a people for God. We are collectively called the church. 

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:4-5)

One of the ways we live this out at Sovereign Grace is by meeting together regularly in our homes. It's not a rule of faith...you won't find "Small Groups" in the bible. However, you will find a long list of "one another" commands. We go to small group because small groups are an opportunity to be what God has made us to be.

Church is a plural word.

We are making room for friends and members. There are new groups forming in Irvine, Orange, and Santa Ana this October. Consider this your invitation.
